Hong Kong's Women of Colour
The term "ethnic minority" has long been used to describe the city's dark-skinned minorities, primarily from South and Southeast Asia. Research by The Zubin Foundation showed that almost 90% of ethnic minorities would prefer to be called something else. The most preferred alternative term was one locals are most familiar with — Hongkonger.
Doubly disadvantaged, ethnic minority women in the city face gender discrimination alongside racial discrimination. These stories will take you on a journey of the trials, tribulations, but also the triumphs of specifically Brown and Black women in Hong Kong.
As a woman of colour in Hong Kong, I hope these stories provide you with a glimpse into the small, but significant community in the city.
